About the JGH Hope & Cope
Hope & Cope is a unique organization that provides psychosocial support for cancer patients, their families and friends. The organization's raison detre is to help patients and their families navigate the sometimes bewildering and frightening journey of the cancer experience. Close to 300 dedicated, specially trained volunteers, many of whom have had cancer themselves, provide patients with support, information, resources and guidance at all points along the cancer continuum.
Hope & Cope is recognized as an important adjunct to the Jewish General Hospitals Oncology Department, which is well known for excellence in patient care, teaching and research. Comprehensive and innovative programs are offered that meet a variety of needs. All services are free of charge and include:
One-to-one peer coaching
Self-help groups
Hospital visiting
Strong and visible presence in the Oncology Clinic, the Radiation Oncology
Clinic, and the Palliative Care Unit
A fully stocked library and resource centre
Public education and awareness programs
Hope & Cope is the only organization of its kind in Canada to conduct evidence-based research on the value of psychosocial support for cancer patients. This research has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed medical journals.
About Roslyn Franken
Diagnosed with cancer at age 29, Roslyn Franken fought back to become a long-term cancer survivor. Then at age 39, at her heaviest weight ever, and concerned for her health, Roslyn decided to fight back once again, only this time to overcome her battles with food, weight and lifestyle, once and for all.
She is author of The A List: 9 Guiding Principles for Healthy Eating and Positive Living (http://www.roslynfranken.com) and host of the How to Thrive after 35 internet radio show (http://howtothriveafter35talkradio.htm). Roslyn has a Masters in Human Systems Intervention from Concordia University in Montreal and is a certified coach through the Professional School of Psychology in California.
