Testimonials for Roslyn's MEANT TO BE presentation
"On April 16, 2024, Palm Harbor Newcomers Club welcomed Speaker and award winning author, Roslyn Franken, to our monthly luncheon. She revealed how her parents triumphed over tragedy of the holocaust and the atomic bomb during WWII. Weaving a story of courage and survival, Roslyn was able to incorporate their survival skills into her own life as she battled cancer and won at age 29. Along with a message of hope, she recounted numerous family situations which helped paint a picture of optimism and hope for the future. During her presentation, numerous photographs of her family were displayed while their words of encouragement were taken to heart. I was very impressed when she played a recording of her mother singing a beautiful song. Our luncheon was a terrific hit with our members because of Roslyn - a true inspiration to us all." ~ Michelle Scott, PHNC President
On behalf of the Oak Village Women's Club, I'd like to thank you so much for your incredible presentation at our May brunch. The story you told was perfect for our Mother's Day theme, and I can't imaging that anyone would not be touched and inspired by your parents' amazing story. It was truly an honor to have you speak to us and share your family's experiences, and I'm sure we will carry your story with us for a very long time. Thank you from all of us! ~ Gloria Anderson, President, Oak Village Women's Club, FL
"Thank you so much for speaking at our Women’s Fellowship. Every one was really impressed how you took a very bad part of history and showed real triumph of spirit and true miracles. We all should take the story of your parents and incorporate it into our own lives. I highly recommend your event to anyone that wants to hear an amazing story by a wonderful speaker." ~ Anne McNamara, Community Congregational Church, New Port Richey, FL
“Roslyn Franken gave an outstanding presentation to our synagogue and interfaith council this past week as part of our United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week programming. She has an amazing story to tell of her parents overcoming the two horrible tragedies of the 20th century, her mother three times from the concentration camp gas chamber and her father from the atomic bomb in Nagasaki. She presents their story with passion and polish, including short videos and pictures to make the story come alive. But the overall message of her presentation, so important in our time, is about resiliency and overcoming adversity and this is what makes it a truly remarkable talk that inspired great conversation and comments after she finished. I highly recommend this presentation to school groups, synagogues and interfaith groups for her inspiring and universal message.” ~ Rabbi Stephen Wise, Shaarei-Beth El Congregation of Halton and Programming Director of the Interfaith Council of Halton
"On October 1st, 2021 Roslyn Franken presented the remarkable story of her parents’ lives at our Academia Hernando lifelong learning program in Spring Hill, Florida. Both of her parents were World War II survivors who, as young prisoners found the strength to survive terrible conditions; her mother was in Nazi Germany’s concentration camps, and her father was a prisoner of war in Japan. Roslyn is an excellent storyteller, keeping us spellbound with a true-life account of her parent’s courage and perseverance. She tells how her mother’s musical talent provided comfort and mental escape from the evils she experienced. With great joy Roslyn reported that her parents had a happy marriage and successful careers. I commend Roslyn for telling the story of ordinary people (her parents) who did extraordinary things with their lives. John and Sonja Franken’s heroic behavior should be remembered, told, and retold to inform, educate, and inspire throughout Hernando County and beyond. ~ Sharon Printz, Co-Program Coordinator, Academia Hernando, Spring Hill FL
"Thank you for your presentation about your book Meant to Be for the Interfaith Council of Halton in February 2022. It was an excellent presentation and I was very touched by your description of how you faced the challenges of your life with such strength and courage. Your family story was indeed an incredible triumph through truly harrowing experiences while still revealing the power of love. Your message on the tenacity of the human spirit was truly inspiring. Thank you for sharing your remarkable story." ~ Stephen Crawford, MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) Oakville, ON
"What Roslyn taught us was that childhood/adult trauma and suffering does not provide us with an excuse for our problems. We must use the insights and lessons learned to refocus on the good so that we free ourselves from the harm. What a wonderful message, spoken by such a unique, and humble person as Roslyn Franken. I thank Roslyn for sharing her inspirational story and reminding us of why we advocate and volunteer for the children." ~ Lawrence Clermont, President, Pinellas County Council PTA (Parent Teacher Association)
"Roslyn, what an amazing story on such an important topic, and one that should be shared with all! It felt like we were traveling back in time and sharing your parents' journey with you. Your presentation was emotionally charged, uplifting and you presented in a manner that was both entertaining and inspiring. Your ability to connect to a variety of personalities, cultures, and ages is a true gift and you would be a huge asset to ANY group who is looking for an amazing, one-of-a-kind speaker." ~ Mendy Yarmush, Rabbi, Chabad at Wiregrass
“Roslyn Franken's presentation of her book, Meant To Be, was breathtaking! From the moment she began telling her parents' story, the entire audience was completely captivated. The entire room was filled with tears, laughter, gasps, and sighs as they hung on her every word. And just when you thought the saga of these two faith-filled survivors couldn't get any more amazing, there was another twist that no one could have anticipated! As the daughter of the two heroic people, Roslyn was able to add an extra touch of personal insight that helped the story of these two people come alive. Even weeks later, our congregation is still talking about this experience. This is such a powerful story everyone needs to hear! ~ Russell O. McKee III, Pastor, Harvester United Methodist Church
"....Roslyn Franken mesmerizes you from the stage, and yet humbly speaks directly to each person in the room as if in a private conversation. She has a true talent for portraying the lives and story of her parents and also herself as both she and her mother simultaneously struggled through chemotherapy to overcome cancer. She tells the tale of struggle through the eyes of a daughter of a POW and a Holocaust survivor- she is a gift to the heart and soul of every person who is privileged to hear her tell the story of survival and love." ~ Susan Heiler, President, 2018 Lake Jovita Woman’s Club
"Roslyn Franken's presentation was sincere, moving and inspiring. The two things I enjoyed most about Roslyn's presentation were 1- Her ability to tell a deeply personal story to a large audience as though she were speaking to her best friend. 2- Her brave and positive outlook on life despite all the struggles her parents faced and she herself faced as well. It was refreshing to hear someone speak who has such gratitude for what is given every day. Attendees were very moved in particular by the multiples accounts of Roslyn's mother's strength of character and sheer determination to survive against all odds.I would recommend Roslyn as a speaker to any public library, high school, senior residence or community because I believe any of these audiences would take Roslyn's message to heart. 1- We can always learn from the past as long as it is never forgotten. 2-We as human beings are stronger than we could ever believe. 3- Every day is a blessing. Thank you, ~ Danielle Bélanger, Manager of Library Programs and User Experience, Côte Saint-Luc Public Library
“Roslyn is a fabulous story-teller. We can all learn from the way she infuses lessons from the horrors of War and what happened to her parents… with inspirational insights, drawn from their bravery, resilience, and unique perspectives on life. Her message is so important – more than ever, to fight bigotry and hate and in particular, to mitigate anti-Semitism.” ~ Jenni Frumer, PhD, LCSW, MSEd, Director of Strategic Initiatives, NEXT GENERATIONS
"Roslyn Franken came to our school and spoke about her book “Meant To Be” to a diverse audience of around three hundred 7th – 12th grade students, and she was excellent! Roslyn’s story-telling ability kept the students’ attention for a full 45 minutes, and kept them wanting to hear more at every turn. This allowed her to reach them with her timely and important core message: that we each have tremendous power over our lives, that we can each choose our reactions to every situation we are in, that we are not at all powerless. Roslyn’s message of empowerment included our outlook toward others as well as our outlook toward ourselves. After sharing her parents’ story, she urged us all to “remember what the power of hate and discrimination can lead to if we don’t stop it.” After all, we share our time on this small planet with each other, and we owe it to ourselves and our world to treat each other with dignity and respect. That’s a great message for the students of today, and Roslyn was a great messenger who wove story into meaning. I recommend her with sincere enthusiasm." ~ Mark Heller, Head Master, Academy at the Lakes High School
"I am a congregational vice-president of Temple Beth David of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and one of the organizers of the synagogue’s annual Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Vigil of Remembrance. At this Vigil of Remembrance an unbroken chain of congregants, representatives of various faith traditions and community members recite the names of Holocaust martyrs and of the Righteous Among The Nations and light yellow memorial candles on a continuous basis for twelve hours. At our April 2018 ceremony of memory, we were privileged to welcome Roslyn Franken as our guest keynote speaker, and to hear her relate the incredible and inspiring story of her own parents’ emergence from the devastation of the Shoah and of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. She told how their determination, resolve, love and faith resulted in a remarkable triumph of the human spirit, all of which has also been captured by her in her book Meant To Be. Roslyn’s relatability and accessibility, in personality, and in the presentation of this remarkable story made her presentation both fascinating and compelling and everyone in attendance found themselves leaning into her talk and her tale, and finding in this story which was focused on two people, many of the lessons and universal themes of survival, and of the ability to maintain one’s humanity in the face of staggering inhumanity that offer uplift and affirmation against a period in human history which is characterized by darkness and despair. Roslyn was deservedly and resoundingly well-received, and the positive response to her appearance continued to echo for weeks thereafter. Roslyn Franken’s is a powerful voice for teaching, for learning, and for inspiration!" ~ Len Schwartz, Congregational Vice-President, Temple Beth David of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
"I had the pleasure of listening to Ms. Roslyn Franken as she addressed the past and present presidents of the Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah. She spoke about her book “Meant to Be: The True Story of Might, Miracles and Triumph of the Human Spirit.” The suffering that her parents endured during the Holocaust and the atomic bomb that fell on Nagasaki inspired her to adopt her parents’ attitude to never give up in her bout with cancer at the age of 29. Her presentation was breathtaking and uplifting, entertaining and inspiring. I highly recommend experiencing Roslyn’s presentation and reading the book as a means of inspiration to assist with the troubles and tribulations that we all experience one way or another in our daily lives. She is a wonderful story teller! I was an educator for over 40 years and I listened to many story tellers but Roslyn Franken is one of the best! Ms. Franken’s presentation would be a great asset to any organization." ~ Etty Segal, President of the Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah
"Your presentation was amazing at our Veteran’s Remembrance Day dinner. I’m sure there was not a dry eye in the house as everyone was hanging on to your every word. You are very passionate about your parents' plight and that passion was passed on to us all. I have had a lot of feedback from the Veterans and Legion members that attended and all very positive. I can’t wait to read your book." ~Judy Campbell, President, Royal Canadian Legion Stittsville Br 618
"As soon as Roslyn took to the stage and began to speak, the students were mesmerized. There was not a single whisper among any of them, and at the end there was eager applause and several inspired questions were asked. Roslyn spoke with incredible grace, confidence and poise. She told the story of her parents in such a way that it affected the entire audience. We were all experiencing the story with her as she told it, and it was clear at the end that the students wanted to know more, about her and her past...I highly recommend Roslyn as a speaker, for not only is she charismatic and captivating, she carries with her an incredible spirit and sense of hope and optimism that is undeniable and infectious. After hearing Roslyn and spending time with her, you want to bask in her positivity. I could feel her wisdom staying with the students, and I think they all left the school that day a little bit more open-minded and aware." ~ Stephanie Trapid, School Librarian, Bialik High School
“When Roslyn Franken approached me about speaking to our community residents about her book, Meant to Be, I wasn’t sure at first as we have never had an author do a presentation before. This was not just an author doing a "book reading", it was a full multimedia, interactive presentation. One of our residents had already read Roslyn’s book and suggested that this would be a great activity for the community and that people would be excited to meet the author in person. I booked Roslyn to speak and the turnout was even larger than expected, we had to add more chairs as people kept arriving. Roslyn is an outstanding speaker. The story she told about her parents incredible WWII survival and her personal battle with cancer was very inspirational, moving and uplifting. At the end of the presentation, everyone stood up applauding in a standing ovation and people lined up at her book signing table eager to get a signed copy of her book. Roslyn’s story is one that everyone should hear and I highly recommend her as a speaker for your community.” ~ Kim Paquette, Activities Director, Sunset Palms

"I approached Roslyn Franken regarding her book “Meant to Be” over two months ago, hoping that she would share her story of her parents surviving the Holocaust. Roslyn responded promptly and said she would share her story. I did not know how beneficial this would be! The experience was incredible. One thing I liked about her presentation is how she included live videos of her parents. I will never forget her story. She is such a wonderful inspiring woman that also includes her life experiences in the presentation. I would recommend her presentation to all ages." ~ Melissa O’Dell, Community Relations Coordinator, Symphony Senior Living Orleans

“Roslyn Franken is both an inspirational and motivational speaker. Her inspiration comes from real life experiences as she relates the stories of her parents and their survival during World War II. The hardships they endured sets the tone of how something so horrible and devastating will also produce the miracles needed in life that give the inspiration and hope for the future. Ms. Franken’s compassion and storytelling abilities would serve well in an organization wanting a person of this caliber. We were honored to have her as a guest speaker.” ~ Ann Laurence, Rotary Club of Spring Hill Central, Florida

Roslyn exhibited the resiliency she gained from her parents when right before her program was to start, the library lost all electricity. Thank you, Roslyn!" ~ Lori Krinkey, Adult Services Librarian, Regency Park Library
"The Jewish community center of West Pasco presentation for this year’s Holocaust Remembrance program included a very special guest, Roslyn Franken… Roslyn’s approach to this subject matter was most respectful and with great pride...I highly recommend everyone to see Roslyn Franken and hear her story. The range of emotions she evoked from the audience was amazing. We cried for the losses her mother felt during her many placements in concentration camps to elation when she was reunited with a fellow camp survivor years later. We were so proud of the cleverness her father exhibited during his prisoner of war status in Japan almost to the point of being right there with him to cheer him on. Thanks to Roslyn for making this year’s JCC Yom Hashoah program an event to remember." ~ Eileen M. Hochstadt, President of the Jewish Community Center of West Pasco
“It was an absolute pleasure to have Roslyn at The Ravines Retirement Residence & Senior Suites. It is very easy to say that all of our residents and visitors who attended were extraordinarily moved by the story that she had to tell, as well as the positive energy that she brought forth. Despite all of the heartache and despair that her parents and then herself have gone through, she helped us all realize that there is ALWAYS hope and that maybe just maybe our problems that we face today aren’t as rough as we think they are. She kept everyone spellbound throughout her story and It was clear that it touched everyone in different ways… I want to express our profound appreciation for helping us understand 'all of the little miracles that life has to offer'. I have had a number of Ravines Residents approach me to tell me how much they enjoyed Roslyn’s presentation and how well spoken they thought she was. Roslyn, I am extremely grateful that our paths crossed & I certainly hope that they do again. You & your family are truly an inspiration and the whole world deserves to hear your story.” ~ Jessica Dube, Recreation Manager, The Ravines

"I just saw an amazing presentation by Roslyn Franken to our Grade 10s and 11s at St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School. She gave two sides of World War II including the Japanese invasion as well as the Nazi invasion in Europe because her father was a Prisoner of War in Japan and her mother lived through all the cruelties of Auschwitz. What was amazing is how well she connected with the students and how she touched them with her speaking. It’s amazing not only how her parents went through so many obstacles and so many difficulties and so many times where they both could have perished, but how they managed to survive through all these hardships and unimaginable cruelty. The way it’s presented with the PowerPoint and the way Roslyn speaks to the students is very attractive and also very easy to understand. I would, therefore, highly recommend that as a teacher of religion or history, this is an amazing presentation to have her come and give for your students as well. Thank you very much, Roslyn. ~ Thomas Baars, Department Head of Religion, St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School

"Roslyn Franken's presentation was an evening filled with emotion and inspiration. A skilled speaker, Roslyn describes the unique and unbelievable journey of her parents, two unlikely World War II survivors, with candour and pathos. Much of this story of survival is set against the background of the two theatres of war: the concentration camps in Europe and prisoner of war camps in Asia. The whole audience laughed and cried as Roslyn, using a multi-media approach including music, took us half way around the world and back while giving us a rare and very personal glimpse into the lives of her parents. With Roslyn as our guide, we went from tragedy to triumph as she shared valuable insights taught to her by her parents. In the end, we were all left to marvel on how her parent's example of self determination and their recognition and belief in a power "greater than our own" can and did make all the difference on what is meant to be. ~Stephen Schneiderman, Executive Director The Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge
“The story of your parents and your own personal journey was moving and authentic and the feedback from the guests has been excellent.
